After two years of work in their schools the teachers involved are positive about their involvement in the project and clearly value the opportunity to develop professionally whilst investigating what 'Learning to Learn' looks like in their schools.

The impact on pupils is similarly positive, with both qualitative and quantitative data to support this. The teachers involved have identified a link with learning to learn approaches and pupils performance, although both teachers and pupils acknowledge that such measures of attainment do not capture much of what the project is about. The positive impact on pupils can also be seen through their behaviour, confidence levels, and dialogue.

The research is also investigating what learning to learn is. The teachers involved in the project have been interviewed to gather their thoughts as have others not involved in project to get a balanced view. For example Fallibroome High School, Cheshire reports that 'Increasingly, L2L in the school is being interpreted as an ethos rather than as a particular set of strategies.'

Questions that have been arising out of the research include:

  • Precisely what the benefits of Learning to Learn are?
  • Is it the ethos about learning that is developing in schools, or the learning dispositions fostered in the pupils?
  • How much benefit comes from the range of techniques and activities that project schools have used?
  • Does some of the benefit derive from the processes of enquiry and research?

We thought it would be nice to leave you with some positive comments from the pupils in the project.

I don’t worry as much now – I know my answer will be okay, I used to panic before and then worry but I think, hey, I can do this now.
