Higher education and the cuckoo in the nest

This report explores higher education's fixation with young full-time learners and traditional academic progression route to full-time undergraduate degree. It looks at the best approach to widen participation that will enable more of UK's working population to achieve at least level 4 qualifications. Recommendations include increasing part-time provision and non-traditional routes into higher education to achieve greater economic prosperity and social mobility.

Learning in the classroom

This inspection report evaluates the impact of learning outside the classroom in a small number of primary and secondary schools and Colleges across England. Learning outside the classroom included skills based and work-related learning placements. Research shows that well planned and implemented provision can improve pupils' personal, social and emotional development. It also demonstrates the impact on attainment in the classroom. Strengths, common barriers and good practices have been identified and discussed in the report.

Effective early intervention for youth at risk of future poor outcomes

This IoE report identifies key risks and protective factors associated with poor outcomes for young people aged 13 to 19. It explores factors such as the role of families, schools and community. It also looks at services, teaching strategies and interventions to improve learner outcomes.

Raising aspirations and realising potential: the case for Family Learning in Europe

This report advocates a family learning approach to widen participation in education and training, and fulfil a range of European social and economic policy objectives. It includes good practice case studies from 10 European countries that have helped to raise attainment and aspirations of both parents and children. The report also puts forward recommendations to develop a more dynamic family learning sector.
