Celebrating the importance of workplace learning in the Classroom

National Learning at Work Day, Thursday 22 May 2008, is the biggest celebration of workplace learning in the country. Supported by the National Union of Teachers, it's the perfect opportunity for school employees of all levels to try out some teacher training with a difference. Learning new skills and recognising those that already exist can create a loyal and motivated workforce leading to individual career success and ultimately overall school success. Through this one day of workplace learning celebrations, teachers and school support staff can be the ones enjoying the learning experience for a change; uncovering hidden talents, enhancing essential skills, learning new hobbies and gaining the confidence to take this learning even further.

Co-ordinated by the Campaign for Learning, the theme for this year's Learning at Work Day is Sustainable Workplaces. Department Heads, HR Professional, Union Learning Reps and school employees will be using the day to learn skills and working practices that will help sustain the planet in environmental terms and help them make changes that result in business benefits.

To take part and make the most of Learning at Work Day, schools could;

  • Organise a cross-departmental Scrap Heap Challenge to turn school waste into masterpieces,
  • Run a Family Story Writing Competition to discover and celebrate the lives behind the teachers or,
  • Encourage a colleague skills swap to uncover any poetic PE teachers, homeopathic head teachers, singing secretaries or cooking caretakers.

Anything goes for Learning at Work Day that helps organisations learn and grow, and meets their business objectives and training needs. For free planning materials and more ideas of how to take part and to register your interest call now on 0870 350 2345 or visit www.learningatworkday.com
