Learning at Work in the classroom

Learning at Work Day, which this year takes place on 24 May, 2007 is a great opportunity for schools to promote the value of learning in the workplace to all staff from teachers to administrators, cooks to lunchtime supervisors. The overall aim of Learning at Work Day is to raise awareness of the importance of workplace learning for both employer and employee. It is a chance to promote existing learning opportunities, discover hidden talents, address skills issues or develop a culture of learning in the workplace that can continue to benefit the organisations well into the future. The beauty of participating in Learning at Work Day for schools is that the events can be tailored to suit the needs and resources of the individual establishment so it is easy to fit fun learning activities around a busy work timetable. Job shadows, staff skills swaps, bite-sized taster sessions and lunch-time quizzes are all popular activities for the Day and can incorporate the main theme of the Day, Live Long and Prosper, or simply reflect the interests and aims of the school and employees. The Campaign offers support, advice and free on-line and printed materials to help participating organisations make their Learning at Work Day events work for them and participants can also be included in the national media promotion to increase the satisfaction and sense of achievement in taking part.
