The School Gates Employment Support Initiative

This initiative runs from October 2009 to the end of March 2010 in 25 areas of England, Wales and Scotland. It aims to increase the amount of employment and enterprise support available to parents in and around their children's schools. It is hoped that the initiative will help increase the number of parents in low income families entering sustainable employment.
The support offered by the School Gates Employment Initiative will entail:

- delivering a co-ordinated, tailored package of information and support to parents in and around their children's school

- promoting greater awareness amongst parents of the local support available to them

- increasing the number of parents wishing to enter the workplace and offering them a clear understanding of the steps necessary to achieve this goal

- increasing the engagement of parents with existing employment and enterprise support.

The initiative gives schools and other local partners i.e. local authorities, Job Centre Plus and Regional Development Agencies the resources to increase their partnership working and to offer parents a co-ordinated package of support which will help them overcome barriers that may prevent them from returning to work.
