Higher Education Overview Masterclass

This one-day masterclass, delivered by Sue Boorman, Policy Consultant to the Campaign for Learning, will provide participants with an overview of the Higher Education sector across the UK, with special emphasis on funding for teaching and learning in England. It will cover current arrangements for funding Higher Education provision in universities and colleges and financial support for individual students. The session will also provide an overview of the main changes for Higher Education in England proposed in the Coalition Government's White Paper, 'Students at the Heart of the System'.

In particular the masterclass will provide delegates with an understanding of the following topics:
· UK universities and university colleges – their characteristics and core activities
· The Higher Education sector in England and current funding arrangements for undergraduate student programmes, including funding for institutions and funding for students
· Key changes to current arrangements proposed in the Coalition Government’s Higher Education White Paper, 'Students at the Heart of the System'

Who is the masterclass for?

· Policy advisers and practitioners in government or national agencies
· Staff in schools, sixth form colleges or local authorities interested in student progression to university
· Those recently recruited to a post in a university or HE college
· Staff in voluntary organisations who work with universities in any capacity


Sue Boorman is an independent researcher and consultant with 25 years experience of UK higher education. She has worked in policy development and central planning/funding for the sector at the former Department of Education and Science (now DBIS), Her Majesty’s Treasury, the European Commission, two precursor bodies to the present English HE funding council and at Universities UK. Sue also has substantial institutional experience and has held research, central administrative and senior executive positions at York, Loughborough, De Montfort and Glyndwr universities. Her particular interests include strategic planning, public and private funding, costing and pricing, part-time study, vocational education and training, and student support services. Much of her work involves strategic policy reviews, including comparative analysis of education and training provision within the four countries of the UK. She also undertakes practical hands-on projects for clients and provides strategic planning and analysis support for individual colleges, universities and sector groups.
