Designing and evaluating vocational qualifications and learning programmes

This one-day masterclass, delivered by Geoff Stanton, Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Education, will provide participants with an overview of the factors that contribute to the design of effective curricula and qualifications in post-14 vocational education, and how these factors inter-relate. In particular the masterclass will provide delegates with an understanding of the following topics:

- The special features of vocational as opposed to general education, and the implications for qualifications design and pedagogy.
- The differences between occupational and academic "standards", and their role in qualifications.
- The relationship between qualifications, assessment regimes and learning programmes, and which should take priority when.
- The identification of the various stakeholders with a legitimate interest in vocational programmes, and the processes by which an effective balance can be struck between them.
- The importance of development processes being cyclical rather than linear.
- The role of the state and of awarding bodies.
The session will consider both strongly vocational programmes for those with a clear commitment to a specific occupation or who are already in employment, and those programmes that deliver a more general education through a vocational focus.

Who is the masterclass for?

- Policy advisers and practitioners in government or national agencies
- Staff in local authorities with a role in 14-19 education
- Staff in colleges and independent training providers with a responsibility for developing learning programmes or staff training.
