What is Family Learning Festival?

Family Learning Festival (FLF) is an annual awareness campaign organised by the Campaign for Learning (CfL) since 1998. FLF promotes and supports family learning events across the country. It aims to draw attention to the importance of our families and friends in forming our attitudes towards learning, and encouraging and supporting us to learn through life. Family learning can lead to powerful benefits for both children and their parents; children’s educational outcomes are strongly influenced by parental involvement in their learning; and parents and carers are often motivated to learn as a result of being involved in family learning activities. This relaxed and non-threatening ethos of the Festival is particularly effective at encouraging parents and carers who may not normally take part in learning activities, to have a go.

Each year, thousands of organisations take part in FLF fun and informal learning activities, enjoy something different and find out about learning opportunities throughout the year. By getting involved in the biggest annual celebration of family learning you could uncover new skills, build new partnerships and help reach your organisational goals - all at the same time!

When is it?
FLF takes place every October. This year it will take place from the 15- 30 October. This year’s theme is Starting New Adventures Together. In line with the Year of Communication, the theme will highlight the importance of spending time and talking to each other to discover new activities together.

Why take part?
Participating organisations report a wide range of benefits for taking part in the Festival. Our last large scale survey indicated:

  • 79% of Family Learning Festival organisers reached new audiences as a result of their activities.
  • 74% of organisers developed new learning opportunities through involvement in the Festival.
  • 55% of organisations developed new partnerships.
  • 73% of organisers ran events that were attended by disadvantaged families or families at risk of social exclusion.
  • 84% of organisations highlighted further learning opportunities as part of their activities.
  • 96% of organisations indicate they will get involved in the Family Learning Festival again.

Who can take part?
Every year organisations of all types and sizes including schools, galleries, museums, community centres, religious venues, theatres, shopping centres and parks hold thousands of events across the country. Local authorities all over the country co-ordinate the Festival in their area and produce special information packs and leaflets to let families know what is happening. Find out who’s taking part this year by visiting the events map (please note this will be live in September).
