Creativity and Innovation - 99% Inspiration, 1% Perspiration?

The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything” George Lois If the above is true, the promotion of creativity in our schools, workplaces and families should be the standard, not the exception. At the very least, creative thinking fuels innovation, experimentation and is, above all, enjoyable. However, we know that didactic teaching methods in schools are still commonplace; “disciplined” working is the norm in many workplaces; and families spend more time than ever in front of the T.V. Is our creativity being constrained? Is this hampering our ability to think “outside of the box”, to be problem-solvers and forward thinkers? Even if creativity is encouraged, can you learn to be the next Picasso, or must we wait for him to be born? Creative learning and thinking is essential to development in science, technology and the arts and is integral to successful enterprise. So how do we foster our own creativity, and the creativity of those we work and learn with? This national learning forum will seek to understand: - Is creativity learnt or innate? - Does creativity fuel entrepreneurship? - Is creativity fostered enough in schools? - Do our working environments inhibit or encourage creativity? - How can we best cultivate creativity in families? Speakers include: - Prof Anna Craft, Exeter University and the Open University - Anna’s national and international work focuses on the twin areas of creativity and educational futures - Dr Kanes Rajah, Director, Centre For Entrepreneurship - Kanes a is sought after international speaker and global educator with a passion for business creativity - Jocelyn Cunningham, Creative Partnerships Legacy Manager, Arts Council England - Jocelyn currently directs the government's flagship creative learning programme, which brokers long term partnerships between creative practitioners and communities - Rick Hall, Project Leader, Ignite! - Rick is a writer and consultant in the arts, young people and creativity in education - Tom Hamilton, Director, InQbate - Tom is a researcher in creativity at the University of Sussex. He is currently Director of InQbate, an innovative space that employs flexible design and embedded technologies to support innovative learning activities Interactive roundtable discussion group sessions will be facilitated by partner organisations, including: - The Learning Connection - Writers in Prison Network - Creative Sparkworks - Storyshapes Ltd. - Relish - Metro Design - Campaign for Learning | ||||||||
