Mr Numbervator and Linda Siegle at the Family Learning Week Launch October 2005 2006 is the Campaign for Learning's 10th Anniversary Year and we are proud to say that for half that time we have been involved in the various stages of our Learning to Learn action research programme. In this edition of our regular newsletter it is easy to see how far the concept of L2L has come since we first started out in 2000, indeed, we include a foretaste of our Phase 3 Year 2 report to whet your appetite. It would be quite natural, after 5 years, to be asking the 'so what? question. What have we found out? Surely, all this research has led to the development of a successful L2L formula? The 5Rs have certainly been proved to provide a very useful framework for the application of L2L techniques. However, what is also clear is that there is no 'one size fits all' with L2L and that a number of well defined interventions and strategies have been successfully applied in a variety of settings. The action research undertaken by the project's teachers and pupils, supported by the Newcastle University team, has generated a process of enquiry which is itself increasingly being recognised as a major factor in the L2L success story. It seems that it is this continuing culture of enquiry, self awareness and reflective practice that is the key, not only to creating learning to learn schools, but also to producing competent, confident lifelong learners. Phase 3 of our research comes to an end this year and the Campaign is already developing further applications for L2L in schools, for teachers and in the workplace. There will be more news of these in our next newsletter. With best wishes for a very Happy New Year from everyone at the Campaign for Learning. Linda Siegle ____________________________________
