Research

Are you able to help in a research project?

If you work in HR or Training and Development in a non-unionised workplace, the Institute of Employment Studies would very much like to speak to you!

They are conducting an important piece of research on behalf of BIS to understand the ways in which training and development are delivered and supported in non-unionised workplace. They are particularly exploring whether some of the ways of supporting learning that have been developed in unionised settings, or as part of union outreach activities to non-unionised workplaces, might be as effective if taken up widely.

The research is running until mid-May. If you are interested in taking part in a teleconference, focus group or one-to-one interview please

contact: Linda Miller on email: Linda.Miller@employment-studies.co.uk

News

The new National Careers Service – helping individuals to make informed decisions about skills and training.

Learning at Work Day is a perfect opportunity to highlight to colleagues and employees the new National Careers Service, which was launched on 5 April 2012. The service will help people make informed decisions about careers, skills and training. Everyone aged 13 and over can use the service, which provides access to independent, professional, high quality careers and skills advice.

The service is confidential and accessible through three main channels – online via an interactive and user-friendly website; through a direct helpline number; and through face-to-face support in the community for adults aged 19 and over. The service offers a range of online tools, including a Skills Health Check, to help individuals explore their interests and assess their skills. Individuals are also able to look at information about careers and job profiles and find out about funding to support their learning. As part of the National Careers Service, adults (19 years and over) can open a Lifelong Learning Account to support them through their working life.

The Campaign for Learning is supporting the promotion of the National Careers Service and Lifelong Learning Accounts with a special promotional poster and a downloadable mini-guide for Learning at Work Day organisers. The mini-guide includes an overview of the National Careers Service and Lifelong Learning Accounts, key facts, resources to promote the services and ideas for activities that you can run on Learning at Work Day and throughout the year.

Download the mini-guide and find out more about the National Careers Service and how you can promote it. To visit the National Careers Service directly search for National Careers Service online
