History of the Campaign for Learning
As a small national organisation with a challenging remit, the Campaign has always prided itself on ‘punching above its weight’.Here are some of our key achievements and milestones .You can find out more about our recent work in our 2010 - 2011 Impact Report.
2011- Report published on Early Home Learning Environments research undertaken for DfE by Family & Parenting Institute in partnership with Campaign for Learning
- Digital Families family engagement programme launched in partnership with E-Learning Foundation, funded by Nominet Trust |
2010- Transformation Fund programme supporting BME fathers’ involvement in Harrow schools contributes to increase from 16% to 74% in participating children’s SATs results
- Campaign publishes ‘Learning to Learn in FE – a literature review’ with CfBT Education Trust
- Two year work programme launched in Wigan on business planning & sustainability for VCS |
2009- BASIS infrastructure support for VCS organisations working with families launched through National Family Learning Network
- Family Learning Week becomes Family Learning Festival and recruits over 350,000 participants
- Social Cohesion Impact research undertaken on FE Colleges’ contribution to their communities
- Best Coach: Dads at Work programme launched working with bus companies and supermarkets |
2008- State of the Nation Survey: 10 years on from the Attitudes to Learning MORI poll, the Campaign re-runs poll to determine whether attitudes have changed, with encouraging results
- ‘New localism and 14-19 funding – putting learner choice first’ and ‘Higher Education – the cuckoo in the nest?’ policy pamphlets published
- Learning to Learn research programme moves into Further Education
- Joint national conference run with Scarman Trust on role of voluntary sector in learning |
2007- National Workplace Learning Network launched, working with learning & development professionals and Union Learning Reps to raise profile and quality of workplace learning
- ‘Putting Dads in the Picture’ project launched for male carers & children in West Midlands
- CfL publishes ‘Tapping the Reservoir’ research report on workplace ESOL for Government
- ‘Accelerate’ programme launched & ‘Making Connections’ guide for VCS organisations published |
2006- DWP-funded Live Long & Prosper programme launched, working with retail organisations to provide financial literacy & retirement planning support for staff
- Keepsakes project, funded by Sainsbury’s Indigo Trust, begins work with young offenders
- Campaign develops strategic alliances with Crisis, Parenting UK & others to influence policy
- European Family Learning Network launched with Campaign as lead partner |
2005- Campaign publishes ‘Family Learning: Working with Offenders’ guide
- Campaign becomes partner in TUC ‘High Road’ project and advises Austrian Government and Unions on developing workplace Skills for Life programme for indigenous adults |
2004- First annual Families for our Times conference with BBC Child of our Time team
- Family Learning Weekend becomes Family Learning Week
- Campaign runs ‘Make it Happen!’ workplace learning events for LSC in Yorks & Humber
- Two-year research & promotion programme on Skills for Life run in Local Authorities |
2003- HLF funded Re: Evolution project starts, linking young people at risk of homelessness with museums & galleries. Participants run national conference and produce staff training video |
2002- Three-year transnational ‘Making Learning Work’ action research programme starts, looking at ‘what works’ in promoting learning in the workplace, particularly for low-skilled workers

2001- ‘The Quiet Revolution: the Rise of the Union Learning Rep’ published with the TUC
- Reading Families Millennium Award Scheme launched, resulting in 450 community reading projects across country, over 70% of which continue after 3 year project ends
- National Family Learning Network launched |
2000- Campaign publishes Family Learning Manifesto
- Campaign begins long-term Learning to Learn in Schools action research project to investigate how teaching & learning can best support development of confident & capable lifelong learners
- National ‘Learning Local Authorities’ programme launched |
1999- First Learning at Work Day co-ordinated by Campaign as part of Adult Learners' Week
- ‘Understanding Barriers to Learning’ published, based on focus group research: early educational experiences identified as important for motivation for learning in later life.
- BT Reading Challenge launched.
- Campaign partners with TES and UfI to run New Year Learning Resolution campaign. |
1998- Campaign publishes seminal MORI survey into Attitudes to Learning: reveals family and work as critical elements in stimulating learning. Report still one of MORI’s most requested publications.
- Campaign launches first Family Learning Day to engage parents, grandparents and carers, particularly those with negative previous experiences, in learning with their children. |
1997- Campaign becomes an independent charity. |
1996- The Campaign for Learning begins as a RSA project after publication of the Kennedy Report. |
